Gilgit Baltistan was the state of Kashmir and Jammu from the 19th century. After the partition of British India, Jammu and Kashmir initially remained and independent state. After the Indo_Pakistan war of 1947. Azad Kashmir was established on territories captured by Pakistan to north and west of the cease-fire line in 1970.The Northern Areas (today's Gilgit Baltistan 72,971 km2) was separated from rest of Azad Kashmir (13,297 km2) the name "Northern Areas" was first used by the United Nation to refer to the northern areas of Kashmir. A small part of northern areas, the shaksgam tract, was provisionally ceded by Pakistan to China in 1963. Northern Areas is the northern most political entity with in Pakistan. It bordered Pakistan's Khyber Pukhtunkhawa province to the west, Afghanistan's Wakhan corridor to north, China to the east and northeast and India administrated Jammu and Kashmir to the southeast. Gilgit Baltistan covers an area of 72,971 km2 (28,174 ml2) and is highly mountainous. It has estimated population approching 1,000,000. It administrative center is the city of Gilgit (populatipn 216,760)
